Monrovia — After a long-awaited period of 1,233 days, the Samuel Kayon Doe Sports Complex in Paynesville is finally set to host the home matches of Liberia’s national football team, The Lone Star.
The opportunity arose after the facility underwent significant renovations, including the playing pitch, VIP stands, bucket seats, media tribune, and other necessary upgrades funded by the Liberian government through the Sports Ministry.
Liberia was amongst several African countries that were sanctioned by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and FIFA in 2019 due to the facility’s failure to meet the required international standards.
However, after the renovations, Liberia’s national football team will now host the Republic of South Africa on March 28 for the continuation of the 2023 Africa Cup Nations qualifiers.

The upcoming match will mark the first game for The Lone Star at the Samuel Kayon Doe Sports Complex since October 9, 2019, when they played Chad in another AFCON qualifier contest.
The Red, White, and Blue, Lone Star will play the Bafana Bafana of South Africa a month away, March 2023, in a double-header engagement that will decide who qualifies as runners-up to the Atlas Lions of Morocco, as the journey for the 2023 AFCON Cup of nations showpiece, that will be staged in Abidjan, Ivory Coast draws to completion.
With the new and improved facilities, the team is expected to have a home advantage and a better chance of securing a victory against their formidable opponent. Fans are eager to witness the long-awaited return of international football to the prestigious sporting venue.
