Amid citizens’ fear of war due to a reckless statement from Senator Prince Y. Johnson, the President of the Republic of Liberia has restored hope to his citizens that the country won’t return to the dark days.

The Liberian President made the declaration upon his return to the country after successfully representing Liberian at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on September 23, 2023.

President Weah’s clarity comes a few days after Nimba County’s senator, who is a former warlord, threatened to bring war into the country – instilling fear in many citizens.

Speaking to the citizens, President Weah stated, “To all distinguished citizens, those who can hear my voice, I want to acknowledge the glory of God and assure you that in our country, there will be no return to a rebel checkpoint.”

He continued: “Do not be swayed by reckless rhetoric. On October 10, you will wake up, go to the polls, and cast your votes for your chosen candidates,” President Weah asserted. “We have faith in democratic processes, and we are dedicated to upholding them. The will of the people is our ultimate goal.”

The president’s words have freed the minds of many citizens who were wondering about the repeat of the dark days due to some sort of reckless statements from the Nimba County senator.

“I have participated in elections, and even those who are now raising alarms of war were my opponents. Today, they claim that our elections commissioners cheated. But let us remember, in 2005 and 2011, they also alleged electoral misconduct,” President Weah said.
