According to Liberia’s Chief Medical Officer and Deputy Minister for Health Services, Dr. Francis Kateh, the total number of people who have died from the gas tanker explosion has increased to 40 – with search still ongoing for more people.
The catastrophic event unfolded late Tuesday evening when a gas tanker, labeled “God’s Willing,” reportedly veered off the road, overturned, and caught fire near the Upper Room Church in Totota. Eyewitnesses recounted that citizens from the community had rushed to the scene to collect spilled gasoline when the tanker exploded, resulting in numerous fatalities and severe injuries.
Dr. Kateh, during an interview at Phebe Hospital on December 27, 2023, revealed that 83 patients were admitted to the hospital, with three confirmed deaths reported at that time. He cautioned that the death toll might escalate as house-to-house contact tracing continues.
