Former Vice President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has condemned the recent violence at the University of Liberia, calling it “irresponsible and an unnecessary provocation” by a ranking official of the ruling CDC Party.
In a statement released on Monday, Boakai criticized the CDC government’s handling of violence at the university in recent years, saying that the government has failed to investigate and produce findings each time violence happens on campus.
“Problems of violence at the University of Liberia continue to occur especially within the last five years because of the inability of the CDC Government to investigate and produce findings each time violence happens on the campus of the University,” Boakai said.
The former vice president also expressed concern over the role of government officials in inciting violence on campus. He referred to a recent incident where a representative from the CDC Party, Acarious Gray, allegedly attacked students at the university.

“Even though students do not have the right to determine who visits the university campus, it is equally important that government officials do not worsen the situation by making irresponsible utterances and clearly setting the stage for violence in an academic environment,” Boakai said.
Boakai called on the government and university authorities to restore peace on the UL campus and engage with the Student Unification Party (SUP) to find a solution to the ongoing situation.
“The Student Unification Party is a critical stakeholder in the political process of our country and it is imperative that they are constructively engaged by the Government and other stakeholders to find an amicable solution to a situation that could undermine the peace and stability of the nation,” Boakai said.
The former vice president’s comments come after several incidents of violence at the university in recent years, including a clash between the SUP and a pro-government group during an Independence Day ceremony in July 2022.
Boakai’s condemnation of the violence at the university and call for dialogue have been welcomed by many of his supporters, with some calling it a step in the right direction toward resolving the ongoing situation on campus.
