The Liberian Senate Plenary has confirmed President George Weah’s nominee for the post of Deputy Commissioner at the Liberia Maritime Authority (LiMA), Edwina Collins. This comes after Collins was initially denied the position in 2022 over questionable credentials, but was recently renominated by President Weah to a similar portfolio.

During her first nomination, Collins had struggled to defend her profile, claiming to be a trained economist and development specialist with years of experience within the private and NGO sectors both locally and internationally. However, she could not name a single place where she had worked to gain such experience.

President Weah, in his recent renomination of Madam Edwina Collins to the Senate, mentioned that the nominee would now present credentials and documents that were previously unavailable to the Senate.

In the Senate Plenary vote, sixteen senators voted in favor of the nominee while Senators Darius Dillon, Nyonblee Karnga Lawrence, Prince Moye, and Jonathan Sogbie voted against the nominee.

The Public Reactions

Samson EJ Mansah

“The envelope vote at the Liberian Senate is really escalating. We need to get people in public positions with the requisite documents that will qualify them. And if the Senate rejected her before, then why now they’re accepting her?

A woman who can’t show a single place where she has worked proves that she’s inexperienced. As for me, I’m not basing it on her experience. My concern is the Senate. Why do they make us believe at first that this woman was not qualified then later come back and tell us she’s qualified? Isn’t it a contradiction?

Those flippant senators that continue to fool us will meet their waterloo very soon comes October. Let me extend my thanks to the other Senators that prove to us that making decisions is not only for them but for the entire country. Thanks to you guys once more.”

Victor Suah

“Belle-driven Senators. You rejected her first and now you have accepted her in the midst of questionable credentials. The majority of these claim to be honorable men and women of the house of Senate lack honesty and patriotism. Sadly, next election they will still be re-elected by their constituents who lack moral judgment. Thanks to those up-right senators who stood on the path of consciousness and integrity.”

Stefy Chea

“No legacy in corruption, remember when you are serving in a certain capacity do the right things because tomorrow will judge you base on your past, when you are no longer in that position you will want others to do the right things, I m addressing our senators please think about tomorrow don’t just eat and think about today, the masses are watching you, history can’t forget.”

Eric T. Manneh

“This country is auto-piloting itself, doom legislature. How can you denied a nominee for credentials problem, but when she was renominated by the president, you confirmed her. Puah, my country, Liberia is too interesting.”

conclusion

It remains to be seen how Collins will perform in her new role as Deputy Commissioner at the Liberia Maritime Authority, given the controversy surrounding her appointment.
