In a recent interview with the Voice of America (VOA), Joseph Boakai, the Presidential candidate of the Unity Party, outlined a resolute commitment to a united Liberia as the country approaches its pivotal elections.
Boakai, a seasoned politician, categorically stated, “We are not looking for a second round.” He emphasized the determination of his party and its collaborators to secure victory in the first round of the upcoming elections. Boakai’s conviction in this regard is rooted in the belief that a single decisive round is what Liberia needs to pave the way for positive changes and sustainable growth.
The central theme of Boakai’s discourse revolves around the necessity of change in Liberia’s leadership. With a bold assertion, he declares, “The Weah government is a no-go-forward for Liberia.” Boakai’s vision is anchored in the aspiration for improvement, growth, and development, which he believes can only be realized by offering Liberians a renewed choice in leadership.

While addressing concerns about divisions within his camp, he reaffirms the democratic essence of Liberia’s political landscape. He asserts, “As far as the Unity Party collaboration is concerned, we are strong enough to be able to go into that election.” Boakai’s statement underscores his party’s resilience and readiness to navigate the challenges of political discourse, all while maintaining a strong commitment to unity.
Furthermore, Boakai critiques the ruling party for undermining the spirit of the Farmington Agreement, a pact aimed at ensuring peaceful elections. He laments, “That’s unfortunate (totting of casket) because after going and signing to peaceful elections, for you to be taking that, I think it’s unfortunate.” Boakai’s observation reflects his commitment to a peaceful political landscape, demonstrating his commitment to upholding agreements and fostering stability in Liberia.
