Amid the backlashes from the general public and the Muslim community, the Benson Street Mosque head Iman has clarified that he had no knowledge of the placement of campaign banners at the face top of the mosque.

His clarity comes days after the public outrageously condemned the mosque’s action for making the worship sanctuary political. On Friday, August 04, 2023, the placards of President Weah were placed everywhere outside the mosque building during his worship visit.

In his clarifications, Imam Mohammed Sheriff stated, “The mosque is a place of worship, not a political platform. The banner placed on the Benson Street Mosque was not authorized by the mosque itself, but rather by the organizers of the CDC campaign, a group known as the CDC Islamic affairs. The mosque was unaware of this.”

He went on to elucidate that the mosque had not extended an invitation to the President for this visit, but rather it was at the President’s expressed desire to attend a prayer session.

“I personally did not notice the banner when I came out to receive the President. I learned about it through a phone call,” Imam Mohammed Sheriff shared. His response underscores the mosque’s detachment from the unauthorized display.

The display of unauthorized banners within a religious setting, especially one of such significance, raises questions about respecting the ethos of the space and the intentions behind its use. The incident has sparked conversations within the community about the importance of maintaining these sacred boundaries, acknowledging the potential repercussions of merging religious sanctuaries with partisan interests.

It is a call for mutual understanding and respect, ensuring that faith and politics continue to occupy separate realms within society, preserving the sanctity of worship and the unity it brings to diverse communities.
