Liberian President Joseph N. Boakai has declared a state of emergency, stressing the urgent need for concerted action to combat substance abuse across the nation.

During his recent State of the Nation address delivered at the Capitol Building in Monrovia on January 29, 2024, President Boakai underscored the severity of the drug crisis, particularly the rampant use of “KUSH” and its detrimental impact on communities, families, and national security.

“Given the need for immediate action to make good my pledge to the thousands of families burdened by this crisis, I am hereby declaring Drugs and Substance abuse as a Public Health Emergency,” President Boakai announced.

In a symbolic gesture of leadership, President Boakai and Vice President Jeremiah Koung pledged to undergo drug testing, setting an example for other officials and citizens to follow. “In this fight, me and my Vice President, we will be the first to take a drug test and I urge all others to follow,” President Boakai emphasized.

The President emphasized the need for collective responsibility and solidarity in confronting the drug epidemic, urging all sectors of society to unite in the fight against substance abuse.

The declaration of a public health emergency shows the government’s commitment to prioritizing the well-being of its citizens and safeguarding the future of Liberia. By mobilizing resources, raising awareness, and implementing targeted interventions, the administration aims to mitigate the harmful effects of drug abuse and restore hope to affected communities.

As Liberia confronts the complex challenges posed by substance abuse, the President’s declaration signals a new chapter in the nation’s response to the drug epidemic. With political will, community engagement, and strategic partnerships, Liberia stands poised to overcome this pressing public health crisis and build a safer, healthier future for all its citizens.
