Liberia: President George Weah Promised to hold Free & Fair Elections in October 2023

Monrovia — The president of Liberia, George M. Weah, said that his government remains committed to holding free, fair, and transparent elections in Liberia. 

Speaking on Monday, January 30, 2023, when he delivered his 6th annual message to the national legislature, president Weah cautioned all Liberians to work together and help maintain the two (2) decades of peace in Liberia since 2003. 

“As this year marks two(2) decades since the signing of the Accra Comprehensive peace agreement in 2003 which ushered in the peaceful environment we continue to enjoy, it is hoped that we can work together putting aside our political differences in ensuring that we can call peaceful abide together in our sweet land of liberty without the chaos of recent years,” President Weah.

 He further narrated that Liberia will continue to demonstrate to the world that Liberia is a peaceful nation and that Liberia is capable and ready to undertake an election that includes all Liberians.

 According to president Weah, the consignment of firearms arrested at the Freeport Monrovia is a major cause for concern, especially at the time when the nation is preparing for the October election. In fulfillment of his constitutional responsibility, President Weah reported to the national legislature that about 200 act was enacted into law. He counted the dual citizenship bill as one of the most significant achievements as a call for national unity. 

Thus, calling on all diaspora Liberians to come home and join in the noble and patriotic task of nation-building. Describing the state of the economy, President Weah said that Liberia is a micro-economics exemption in the West African region. 

He further explains that under his leadership, Liberia has recorded the highest domestic revenue performance since the end of the civil conflict. He said there was an increment in revenue collection, including a grant in 2022, as compared to 2021 from $646,000,000 to $740,000,000.

 President Weah, who is seeking re-election, said, “we have brought inflation down from a high of 30% to a single-digit rate that is now under 7%.” According to president Weah, his government has done more over the year for the Liberian people, ranging from hospital constructions to pavement of the road, paying WAEC fees for 12grades students, and many more. 

The Liberian leader made the remarks when he delivered his last annual message to the national legislature as required by law.
