Monrovia — Africa’s only Ballon d’Or winner turned president – George M. Weah – has once again proved to his counterparts that he has what it takes to reclaim and maintain the Liberian presidency.

Saturday, February 4, 2023, stalwarts and partisans of the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) pulled out thousands of people to endorse George Weah for recontesting the Liberian presidency.

President Weah, who is serving the last year of his first term, has come under numerous criticisms from the opposition community. Top opposition figures like Mr. Cummings and Mr. Boakai have frowned at the president for bad governance, lack of interest in governing the country, putting the country’s security at risk, and corruption among others.

Of recent, President Weah and his government were slapped in the face for being the 142 least corrupt nation out of 180 countries, with 26 points scored, according to the 2022 Corruption Perceptions Index.

During the third quarter of last year, the US Government sanctioned three of President Weah’s top officials for public corruption. Some members of the public have also accused the current government of having a part to play in unexplained deaths across the country.

With all these claims, the president and his officials have boasted of the pavement of roads, the building of hospitals, free tuition in public universities, and economic stabilities as tangibles since they took over the country.

The Weah administration has also cried out loud, times without numbers, that he took over a broken economy from his predecessor – Madam Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.

Amid the claims and counter-claims from both the opposition and the ruling establishment, it was speculated that the president does not have what it takes (population) to reclaim the presidency. Contrary to that assertion, the CDC party filled the streets over the weekend to send a warning to the opposition.

Although one may argue that bringing out people in the streets does not warrant votes, from the look of things on Saturday, underestimating President Weah’s ability to pull a crowd is unfair. As things stand, the race for the presidency is a tight one.
