In times of tragedy and adversity, unity and compassion shine brightest. The world is witnessing a heartwarming display of solidarity as the national team footballers demonstrated their heroism by donating blood to earthquake victims in their homeland.
On Friday, September 08, 2023, Morocco experienced its deadliest earthquake since 1960 – the earthquake that took the lives of more than 12,000 people in Agadir.
The national team players who were set to play away to Liberia had to see their game postponed due to the devastation of the natural disaster that took the lives of over 2,122 people away.
The earthquake, which struck Morocco with unexpected force, left a trail of destruction in its wake. Besides the reported deaths of over 2,122 people, an additional 2,421 individuals were injured and in dire need of medical attention. The nation found itself tussling with the aftermath of a tragedy that shook not only the ground but also the collective consciousness of its people.
In the face of this calamity, Moroccan footballers who were set for national duty rallied together to ensure they formed part of the blood donation process. This initiative wasn’t about winning matches or accolades but saving lives and healing wounds.
Video footage from the national team page on X (formerly Twitter) shows scores of players, from Hakimi to goalkeeper Yassine Bounou, heading for the donation.
Citizens from around the country also rushed to hospitals in Marrakesh and Rabat to donate blood to the victims. Other humanitarian organizations have been donating items to Morocco in the past hours.
The footballers’ decision to donate blood sends a powerful message of compassion, empathy, and unity. It exemplifies the principle that, in times of crisis, no act of kindness is too small, and together, we can make a significant difference.
