Liberian Senator Abraham Darius Dillon used the occasion of Joseph Jenkins Roberts’ birthday to call for an end to the culture of impunity in the country.
In a statement posted on his social media accounts, the senator urged Liberians to no longer accept the status quo and to demand accountability from those in power.
“The time for ‘just leave it’ must end. The culture of impunity must end. The time to genuinely act is NOW! The time to encourage and reward good behavior is NOW!!” Dillon wrote.
He pointed to examples from history, including the civil rights movement in the United States, India’s struggle for independence, and South Africa’s fight against apartheid, as evidence that change is possible when people stand up for what is right.

“Maybe, if we continue to agree to ‘just leave it’ all the time on things that matter, we may all end up like ‘chickens without teeth’,” he warned.
Dillon specifically called for an end to bad governance, lack of functioning systems, and the culture of impunity in Liberia.
“People must be shamed and punished for bad conduct. We must never continue to agree to ‘just leave it’. Never again!!!” he declared.
He acknowledged that fighting for change can be difficult and that those seeking it may face resistance, but he encouraged Liberians to persist in their efforts.
“It will take courage and resilience; and people genuinely seeking and fighting for real change may even be resented, bashed, insulted and misunderstood along the way, but we must keep going to the logical end,” he wrote.
The senator concluded his statement by wishing Liberians a happy JJ Roberts Birthday and national holiday, with a call to action to work towards a better future for the country.
“Happy JJ Roberts Birthday; Happy National Holiday with best wishes to you, all of you!!” he said. “Let’s make Liberia a better place for all!”
